MARYSVILLE AND THE FALLS

It's amazing how within 1 and a half hours drive from Melbourne the scenery can change so much. From an environment that is very urban, modern and cultivated one passes into a prehistoric world where the ferns are 2 metres high and the vegetation is as dense as you would imagine in a tropical jungle!

Here we are in Marysville, a small country town which was devastated by raging fires during  the summer of 2009. The stories we hear from the locals are so sad and touching it gives you goose bumps all over. Imagining the terror of what someone could live in such a situation stops you in your thoughts. Seeing the skeletons of what were majestic trees of over 60 metres high and whole forests like that makes those stories so real.

Marysville is beautiful and we love being here. We go for daily hikes in the forest and each time we come back with a sense of awe and satisfaction. On a recent hike we visited the Stephenson Falls named after Mr Stephenson, an engineer, who founded the town of Marysville in the late  19th century to cater for the gold diggers and the wood chopping industries of the time. He named the town after his wife Mary. Marysville because of it's natural beauty soon became a destination for honey-mooners by the early 20th century.

We now understand why and if  you are ever in Melbourne it's definately worth the detour!
